In 2005 and 2006, Karen Escovitz and I conducted knowledge exchange activities with a mental health program in Ichikawa outside of Tokyo. This opportunity was initiated by Dr. Eri Kuno (University of Pennsylvania) with funding from The Japan Foundation. At that time, we were employed with the Matrix Center at Horizon House, the final organizational version of The Matrix Research Institute which closed in 2002.
First program staff from "For Us Club House" came to Philadelphia during one of the biggest snow storms ever. We spent a week introducing them to programs in the Delaware Valley area and providing opportunities for discussion and knowledge exchange. They returned home, and we began planning for our visit to Ishikawa. During this time, we developed two films “Work and Recovery” with staff and program participants at the Howard Center in Burlington VT. In Japan, others developed a film about work and mental health in Japan.
Perhaps these films might be useful for discussion with your program participants.
Works & Recovery
Employment in Japan
The final step to this knowledge exchange project was our trip to Japan. The team included Karen and I from The Matrix Center, 2 people from The Howard Center in Burlington VT, and Jeanie Whitecraft from the Southeastern PA Mental Health Association, Philadelphia Pa.
